Boise Drum Studio is your first call for beginning & advanced drum set, timpani, and marimba lessons in the Treasure Valley.
Hi, I'm Matt Grady. I'm currently the principal timpanist with the Opera Idaho Orchestra and have an extensive freelance performing career that stretches from Salt Lake City to Seattle. I also own and operate Boise Jazz, Inc., a booking service for jazz music in Boise.
I've had the great privilege and fortune in my career to perform with and learn from some outstanding musicians, and my goal is to pass along that knowledge to anyone interested in starting their journey into music-making with drum lessons in Boise.
I have a Master's degree in Music Performance from Temple University in Pennsylvania, where I studied timpani and percussion with members of the Philadelphia Orchestra. I also have the distinction of winning the first percussion audition in the history of the Boise Philharmonic.
Whether you’re a beginner or more advanced in your skills, I look forward to helping you grow as a musician in a fun, thoughtful, and supportive environment.

I have extensive performing experience across the U.S. I've been appointed to percussion positions with Opera Idaho, the Boise Philharmonic, and the Hawaii Symphony and have performed with the Seattle, Spokane, and Utah symphonies, Pacific Northwest Ballet, Utah Opera, and the Grand Teton Music Festival.
I served as the drum set specialist in the Boise Phil and have played in numerous bands and musical theater productions. I've also performed in Scottish pipe bands and in rudimental drum settings.
My teaching background is extensive: I've taught privately for more than 20 years. My institutional experience includes positions at Northwest Nazarene University, Boise School District, Music School of the Northwest in Seattle, Temple University Music Prep, and the Settlement Music School in Philadelphia. I'm currently on the faculty of the Sun Valley Music Institute.
I'm pleased to offer a wide range of instruction across all percussion instruments. Offerings include:
While I specialize in technique, musical literacy, and concert repertoire, if you can hit it, I can teach it.
As parent myself, I want to ensure that you and your student musician are getting excellent value for your investment. My rates for drum set lessons, marimba lessons, and timpani lessons are affordable and competitive with those of other local studios.
I also provide a no-obligation trial lesson for prospective students. For more information, please visit my Lesson Policies page.
My home studio is located in Southeast Boise near Bown Crossing. I'm 10 minutes from downtown Boise via Parkcenter Blvd. and serviced by two public transit routes. Additionally, I'm only five minutes off of I-84, making my studio easily accessible to students from Meridian, Nampa, and Mountain Home.
For prospective drum and percussion students in Ketchum, Hailey, and other areas in the Wood River Valley, I offer remote drum and percussion lessons (and occasional in-person visits) through the Sun Valley Music Institute.
Students will be learning and performing on high-end percussion equipment, making this an ideal environment for both drum set lessons and marimba lessons. My studio is outfitted with the following:
Concert glockenspiels and vibraphones are also available for lessons on an as-needed basis. Timpani lessons are generally by arrangement. And if you're looking for equipment to practice on, I can provide top-quality percussion instrument rentals at a nominal fee for currently enrolled students.
The existing instructional literature can be intimidating for beginning students. To address this, I've developed and tested a variety of drum lesson materials designed for consistent, incremental progress in areas such as drum set coordination, percussion technique, and overall musicianship. I also have a large personal library of percussion methods, solos, orchestra excerpts, and supporting musical literature to draw from, allowing me to tailor our drum lessons to a student's specific interests.
As a performer, I'm constantly practicing, so I'm right there in the trenches with my students. Whether it's polishing a new technique or learning a part for a show, I'm putting in the practice hours as well, so I'm familiar with various practice strategies and the little insights that can help students improve faster. This makes the learning process more enjoyable for everybody—student, parent, and teacher alike.
Please reach out if you're ready to roll in Boise with drum set lessons, marimba lessons, or timpani lessons.
