What to Expect from Drum Lessons at Boise Drum Studio

Whether you’re a complete beginner, a homeschool student, or an advanced percussionist, we design lessons to help you build skill, confidence, and a lifelong love of music. This page explains exactly what to expect from your first lesson and beyond.

Your first step is our no-obligation trial lesson. During this 30-minute session:

• We’ll assess your current skill level
• Discuss your goals and musical interests
• Introduce you to our instruments and materials
• Give you a sense of our teaching style

Trial lessons cost $30 and provide a clear roadmap for your future lessons.

Each lesson is carefully structured to maximize progress:

Warm-up & Technique (10–15 minutes)

1. Exercises tailored to your skill level
2. Focus on posture, stick grip, and hand/foot coordination

Applied Practice (10–15 minutes)

1. Working on current pieces or exercises
2. Reading music and interpreting rhythms
3. Instrument-specific skills (drum set, marimba, timpani, etc.)

Review & Practice Assignments (5 minutes)

1. Summarize what was learned
2. Assign targeted exercises for the week
3. Provide practice tips to maximize efficiency

Lesson length may vary depending on age, experience, and your goals — we offer 30, 45, and 60-minute sessions.

Boise Drum Studio offers instruction on:

• Drum set
• Marimba, xylophone, vibraphone
• Timpani
• Snare drum & general percussion

Students gain a balanced understanding of technique, musicianship, and performance skills across multiple instruments.

Successful students follow a simple, structured practice plan:

• Short, focused sessions daily (10–30 minutes for beginners)
• Review previous exercises
• Learn new material assigned in lessons

We categorize practice into three types:

1. Developmental Practice – building new skills
2. Utility Practice – preparing pieces for performance
3. Maintenance Practice – warm-up or recreational play

• Online Lessons: Flexible instruction from home, ideal for students in Boise, the Wood River Valley, or further afield
• In-Person Lessons: Offered at our Southeast Boise studio, or occasionally in the Wood River Valley by arrangement

Lessons may be a mix of online and in-person depending on your location and schedule.
